I author a blog that focuses on my ongoing task of defining a ’best of breed’ list of freeware for Windows. So I post only the best software in each category. I’ve spent years testing...

I think Amorak (for Linux) is probably one of the coolest audio players I’ve ever come across. I think Amarok 2 will have Windows compatibility.

Try this also, contains countless freeware

hello when you decide to gamble go to

htp://gamblecan.com/

brett mccluskey

an alternative to p2p and torrent programmes a little less consistent in terms of content retrieval but it is not tracked by the RIAA currently.

also it is not technically a programme as it is a search engine, it can be used to find i anything from e-books to music to more software, its is can also be used as a proxy although i have not found strong functionality with this feature

http://www.g2p.org/

its really helpfull if you need to find an mp3 whilst at school or work as most servers do not block it.

the site on which i found this helpful little search engine is

http://www.g2p.org/

this contains lots of little hacks from how to make a DIY mobile infra red transmitter to simple firefox ticks to improve functionality.

hopefully someone will find some use from these i use them regularly

Have you tried http://SpeedyLink.net

It was developed long before Tiny URL and has not been redeveloped using AJAX
SpeedyLink

Excellent list. I’d like to recommend adding to that list Auslogics Disk Defrag, CCleaner, and Feedreader.
David Mackey (InformedNetworker.Com)

I find GOM Player to be the best one out there, wether free or not. I have tried alsorts, including all the usual MWC, WMP, WinAmp, Nero ShowTime, MPC, RealPlayer, and all the above with various codec packs. It really is outstanding.

MHD

MPLAYER , the multimedia player who plays everything ... everykind of video / sounds / "flux" !

Please don’t forget http://www.shellcity.net/ for some really useful freeware.
liderr

I have a designed an open source app (hosted on sourceforge.net) that is particularly useful to people with their own domain + hosting.

http://brandonz.net/projects/zscreen

It allows you to capture region/window/full-screen screenshots, FTP them, and put the URL in your clipboard in a single keystroke.

If you get into development at all, you’ll need some more software than what you’ve got listed...
Apache web server
PHP, Python, or Perl library for Apache web server
MySQL database

That way, you can now run
MovableType or WordPress blogging software
Joomla!
or a number of other open source content systems.

Also, a good color picker, Winblows only unfortunately,
Pixie

Two great troubleshooting/security tools:
Nmap for security
Ethereal - saved my tail a few times trying to figure out why data wasn’t going between browser and server.

No one has mentioned Firefox’s little brother, the email client Thunderbird either.
alex

It’s "bear with me," not "bare with me." Unless, of course, you want me to get naked with you. I doubt you want that.
Spelling cops

you should submit this site to allysource.com to add to the best site list
good site

Nice, you got Firefox on the list, now fix ur website, because it only looks good in IE.
Terry

there are more free, useful applications at http://coolware.blogspot.com
syahid ali

Good list. I’ll add madotate(3D windows), spacetime beta(3D browser),shock
4way(cube with 4 desktops) and xion(good music player with many skins).
Eye candy and toys all free.

Kyle

you have to add neo office for the mac OS X. Developed from the open office app, but much better, and you don’t have to install X11 to run it.
esb

I forgot:
http://www.8hands.com
Dave

Also try 8hands, the profile aggregator.

Dave

The Filter is great audio playlist creator
Dan

Everybody needs monitoring :)

Hyperic HQ - http://www.hyperic.com/

There is a GPL’d version of HQ available free of charge.

John Mark

I appreciate this list. As a developer, I am always looking for gode stuff that makes my life easier. I especially like the Feng-GUI service for attention-heat-mapping.
Wolf Halton

I like this, saved it to my bookmarks :)
mumbajambo

ClamAV antivirus should also ne in the list. www.clamav.net
It is available for Linux, and Windoze
Mr Mainframe

Under "Development Applications (IDE’s)" I would recommend Lazarus with the FreePascal Compiler (Linux,OSX,Win ...). Looks a lot like Delphi.
Excellent for single bin files. Also great for CGI-Bin apps.

Didi

Better freeware and Open source:

[A Firefox killer] Browser: OPERA
(Win,OSX,Linux,BSD)

[The best viewer] Picture view/edit: XNVIEW
(Win,OSX,Linux,BSD,Solaris+more)

[A Ubuntu killer] PC-BSD.
Install programs as easy as Window,
3D beryl desktop, and all the Linux program goodness you can install, and it’s FASTER and EASIER to use than Ubuntu :D

storm

You forgot Miro, formerly known as Democracy Player. It’s cross-platform, and one of the easiest tools for dealing with vlogs and Web TV.

Joe

bout:

MWSnap

Not quite correct on most popular linux distros, at least if you use the distro watch stats. Distrowatch defaults to 6 months. For the past 3 months PCLinuxOS has beaten Ubuntu. I use both so it doesn’t really matter to me but I do find that PCLinuxOS is easier to use for a newbie.
Les

I must add AbiWord to this list. If you’re looking for a program that just does word processing, it’s fabulous, and it can read/write multiple file formats, including MS Office formats and OpenOffice formats. It runs on a variety of platforms, it’s open source, and best of all, it doesn’t have nearly the bloat or slow speeds of OpenOffice (especially if you’re using an older system, as I do).

I also have another candidate for antivirus software: Avira AntiVir. It also has a free version, and imo, it’s better at detecting viruses than AVG (which I used for 5 years), but it does seem to be prone to more false positives. ZoneAlarm firewall (free for personal use) and Comodo’s firewall (also free for personal use, if I recall correctly) are two great firewall programs.
Ninara Poll

not everyone uses windows -- how about we all stop assuming that?
rogaine

IMO the greatest collection of F/OSS software today is JackLab, which is available to all as a freely downloadable DVD image. There is both a live and installable version of the DVD, which includes amazing free software such as

Ardour
Rosegarden
KDEnlive
Firefox
Ktorrent
DeVeDe
kino
mplayer / xine
k3b

and many many more!

Dan MacDonald

I have had very good luck with Zone Alarms free edition for a firewall. I also use AVG free edition for virus protection. Very happy with both.
Larry

Here’s one for development:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005/2008 (beta) Express Editions

Not at all open source but still good and free
Russ

IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.net/) be sure to download the plugins.

A very nice media viewer, most image, video and sound formats supported.

Lookout - now hard to get outlook addin.

Once there used 2B a small firm who was sooo successful in creating a small and slick outlook search add-on, that needed .net and was so good, that Microsoft bought it out, and digested it into MSN desktop,,

It can still be found somewhere, not anymore in Microsoft realm.

I have not checked it on a 2007 system, neither vista.

write boaz_yah@yahoo.com should you like a 1.3M zip sent over by mail

I do not monitor this account daily so please do not expect 24/7 service.

Another to add to your list:

http://www.getlibra.com/

Freeware realistic cataloging software for DVDs and Books. Works with the webcam to scan in your items via barcode too.
hubber

Instead of Winamp you could try foobar2k (http://www.foobar2000.org)
xyr

Asterisk (www.asterisk.org) -- what office can operate without a phone system -- and Asterisk enables you to turn an inexpensive server into an IP PBX that rival proprietary phones systems costs tens of thousands of dollars (or more).

what, no joomla?

There is a list of free/open source software that I’ve paid for:
http://arc.nucapt.northwestern.edu/F/OSS

Popular programs omitted from your list: abiword, gnumeric, latex (and various tools), vim, filezilla, gnucash, putty, thunderbird, vim, vnc, inkscape
F/OSS

How about clonezilla ?
Especially clonezilla live
http://clonezilla.sf.net/clonezilla-live

Clonezilla is a partition or disk cloning tool similar to Symantec Ghost. It saves and restores only blocks in use on the hard drive if the file system is supported. For unsupported file systems, dd is used instead. It has been used to clone a 5 GB system to 40 clients in about 10 minutes.
clone

Nice list!

My vote for some that are already mentioned:
mplayer, clamwin, and 7-zip (all excellent and all open-source)

And one more named "Geany" for the IDE category:
http://geany.uvena.de/

Jeff

Opera version 9.23 Build 8808 is a great web browser. It’s an alternative to IE.

IObit Advanced Windows Care Personal and IObit Smart Defrag are great freewares.

TweakVI Basic is a great tweaker and optimizer for Windows Vista.
Southern Cross

LogMeIn (www.logmein.com) - remote access - there is a free version for both PCs and Macs
Maisy

I discovered Scribus a while back as well, but really can’t get used to it. I’m sure it has its merits. One might be able to some work with it after using it for a while. Currently, I just gave up however.
Nils

Azureus 3.0.2.0, Amarok, Pidgin 2.10, Gimp 2.4, Picasa, NetBeans 5.5.1, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, jEdit 4.3pre10.

You might want to consider Scribus the Desk Top Publishing program. Originally developed for Linux, and included or a click away on many Linux distros, Scribus is also now available for Windows XP.

davecs

You are missing the Opera web browser and an accompanying web developer toolbar: http://operawiki.info/WebDevToolbar
Curt

There’s a few here I didn’t know about, Kuler for one! Good work.
PK

Great list!
Harpo

I can recommend Inkscape as a vector drawing tool. Far from being finished as a project it does get you great results fast. Saving as .eps lets you work from there.
