Hey Steven,

I moved to Ubuntu a couple of weeks ago in order to give it an easier life. Like you I encountered the no internet = no updates = nothing works issue but stumbled through it and got everything set up.

The only set back I currently have is getting my two soundcards working correctly. There are lots of options none of which obviously do what I want. Sure I will crack it at some point though!

All in all my experience so far on Ubuntu has been very positive. I have very quickly adapted to it and feel comfortable. The feeling of safety knowing most viruses etc will not affect you is quite welcome too.

I have Frank, I’ve tried almost all of the top releases; I opted for Ubuntu because not only did I have the image downloaded and ready to go but it was the only Gnome release I had to hand too. The laptop is a bit old and it needs an easier life, otherwise I would have gone for something KDE.
try linux mint
