Yahoo takes on Google
Y-Maps wields live traffic reports, directions to your mobile (sound familiar?) and satelite images to turn the map feature into a Hybrid. Quite clearly incomplete however; if you direct your browsing towards the sunny old UK (Norwich in this case - FYI it's on the east side) and it does little more than highlight the major roads and places. Impressive nontheless that someone other than google is trying this and to what seems like good progress. What next? Yahoo Earth? An exciting development for Yahoo but is it too late? Have google taken over the planet so much that all hope is lost for the popular alternative? Time will tell but this author finds it admirable that Yahoo keep their gloves up and stick with it.
Infact, people are apparently becoming disgruntled with Google; an engine made popular by it's relative simplicity and raw ability to find what you were after. Now however, the first 10 results all feel like price comparisons and sponsored links. Are Google pushing their luck? With Yahoo ever-ready to pounce on the opportunity I feel 2006-07 could possibly see a shift in power. Probably not though.
