Why Wikipedia is the best site on the entire Internet

Something I've debated with collegues is what the best website on the Internet is; a difficult question that only leads to more questions. What qualities does the best site need to have? What genre does it sit in? My view is (and always has been) that Wikipedia is the single greatest website on the Internet, and here's why.

When trying to decide the best site on the Internet it's worth trying to establish certain criteria such as usefulness, fun, longetivity etc. Yet all it took was a day of normal work before I had others agreeing that Wikipedia was indeed (one of) the best sites on the entire Internet.

Why Wikipedia?

A logical question, why Wikipedia over BBC.co.uk, Digg.com, Killsometime.com or any other site for that matter? Well, whatever your information needs - Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for all of it; an exponentially increasing one at that. All it takes is a simple Google search for anything and more often than not Wikipedia is right there at the top of the search results offering information to you.

As an example, here is a search for "egg and bacon" on Google. As you can see, about 4-5 down is Wikipedia. Search for something more information based (such as the data protection act) and it's still there, smiling and offering you several pages of information.

Wikipedia has an answer for everything and has several years worth of information for you to absorb. If ever I need to uncover the meaning to [x], or the origins of [y] then Wikipedia is the first stop.

What do you consider to be the best site on the Internet? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
