Vista won't need an antivirus? Yes, yes it will

Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin was reported as saying that Vista's security features are so capable that he would have no issue with letting his 7 year old son using Vista without antivirus installed. Right, I assume he meant without having the internet connected.

Vista > XP SP2
It makes me cringe to think that people are going to believe this sort of claim - that they could happily browse any number of questionable sites safe in the assumption that Vista will protect them.

"XP SP2 did an amazing job"
Oh Jim, obviously you've never taken IE6 to the red light district of the internet because I couldn't describe the torrent of infections I've fought off machines in the past.

jim allchin Vista will be king, it will be diseased too
Make no mistake, I hope a lot of people move to Linux instead of Vista (where you're free of Viruses, I might add) but you can't deny the majority share that Vista will inherit from XP and there's something to be said for that:

Incentives for malware
The majority of people using it, claims of invulnerability... This is the operating system equivalent of "unbreakable rulers", someone will always devote time to proving such claims wrong. There's a massive incentive to get your malware on Vista and to say it won't need an antivirus is utter madness.

Backwards compatibility
Software backwards compatible with XP = legacy security loopholes? Discuss. Surely with porting stuff across to Vista there will be some security leak? Even if there isn't I fail to believe that there won't be at least one major security flaw overlooked in development.

Don't listen to him
In conclusion, don't listen to him. If you DO go to Vista, please make sure you arm yourself with an antivirus (when they sort one out, obviously) because otherwise you'll have a facked up install and nothing but empty promises from November 2006 to blame. Shame on you Jim Allchin for spreading such rumors.
