Ubuntu is more popular than kittens AND pie

In a mildly childish attempt at putting the popularity of Ubuntu into real context, I've enlisted the help of Google trends to benchmark searches for "Ubuntu" against other words. Mindless spam or important sociological experiment? You decide.

Google trends is a tool provided by the search giant that graphs specific search terms against one another. Therefore the resulting graph is purely a metric of how many times one word is searched on Google compared to another. It doesn't directly correlate to popularity but it gives a small indication. Unless you abuse it like I do.

Ubuntu is more popular than kittens AND pie?!
Now, there are more kittens in the world than there are Ubuntu machines and there are probably more pies in the world than kittens - but this Google trends graph shows that more people search for "Ubuntu" than either of those two words.

ubuntu vs pie vs kitten

The above Google trends clearly shows that Ubuntu is a more frequently searched word than both kitten and pie.

Ubuntu has nothing on "free" or "porn"
But to put things into a more real search-based context, two very commonly searched words completely dwarf Ubuntu in all ways, shapes and forms.

ubuntu vs free vs porn

Free is still one of the most searched words on the Internet - funnily enough. Porn is probably up there too (heavily associated with free I imagine) so Ubuntu is left at the bottom, flatlining.

This little experiment had no point, no purpose but does show that Linux content doesn't necessarily have to be stuffy, boring or targetted to slating Microsoft. Ubuntu > pie > kittens.
