The 10 best Photoshop video tutorials

Finding good Photoshop can difficult at best, with a lot of tiresome tutorials dating back to Photoshop 6 still lingering around on search results. So I decided to compile some of the best video tutorials around to make life a little easier.

Using layers to add effects
This tutorial shows you how to cut out a person from an image and use different layers to create special effects. In this example, a woman is removed from a photo and a series of coloured flames and objects are placed behind her, to create a professional looking background.

Using the extract filter to remove items from photos
This tutorial shows you how to remove people and objects from photos. The first example is removing a church from a photo, including the touching up of the edges. The second example is removing a very complicated picture of a man which is the more practical of the two examples.

All about masking, vectors and clipping
This tutorial covers the fundamentals on the topics listed. It's long (21mins) so...

Creating web icons and a navigation bar
This is particulary helpful to those of us who do a lot of Photoshop work destined to appear on the Internet. This is actually a really good tutorial explaining how to make a nice set of icons.

How to use the replace colour tool
This is quite a useful tool that I personally don't know how to use properly; this tutorial explains how to use it. In the video the user explains how to change the colour of a lady's jumper in a photo, but this practice can be translated into any number of other things.

Turning photos into sketches
This is certainly less useful than it is cool, because sketches haven't been a cool effect in quite some time - but it's a good tutorial and I'll certainly be toying with this. It's a really quick process so worth watching if you have 3mins spare.

Using the magic wand tool
This is a commonly misunderstood tool, used in situations that it's not suited towards. As the author of this video states, it's an amazingly powerful tool if used correctly, and this tutorial goes some way towards educating you how to use the wand correctly.

Adding images inside text
This is a really easy, effective trick within photoshop so if you don't know how to use clipping masks, this explains how to do it.

How to get that iPod silhouette effect
Everyone has seen those iPod adverts where you've got the black silhouette of someone contrasted by the bright white outline of the iPod and headphones; both on a bright background. This tutorial shows you how to do that.

Blending modes
This tutorial explains the different blending modes available within Photoshop, and how to apply them to a specific task.

So there we have it, 10 equally excellent Photoshop tutorials to help you on your way. Most of them are aimed at the more novice user (as I knew most of the things discussed) but there are some really delightful tips in there that even seasoned designers might find useful. I hope this is of some use to a few of you.
