Run Ubuntu, Run! Part II
Unfortunately, part two of this story is not filled with such joy. The Ubuntu box is dying.
Hold back your tears. The machine was very old and has been subjected to some fierce temperatures in my office, resulting to temperature alarms going off - I think the HSF is on it's last legs. Obviously, a fixable problem but I think I'll let the old girl rest in piece - it's just not worth saving a PII anymore.
While this is bad news for me (because I shall be sans-Ubuntu for a while), it allows me to conclude how excellently the system ran until it's hardware related demise. Running tasks were rarely painful despite the solar powered processor (it wasn't, it just felt like it sometimes). While I wasn't able to do anything world changing with the machine thanks to it's generous 3gb hard drive, I was able to play with plenty of functions and it really secured it's place in my heart. It's only until you live with this distro that you realise it's user-friendliness.
If only I could install Dapper Drake on my main machine in a dual boot setup without something 'special' happening. (I'm in the process of trying but something always grabs my attention, or Ubuntu doesn't quite manage my partitions comfortably)... Maybe I should hang Ubuntu up for a while and delve into Fedora? As it stands, I'm unsure. All I know is I'm sorry to see the machine die. If it weren't for my complicated setup and love for gaming I would contemplate going into Ubuntu full time.Buy another machine I hear someone say - I can't... I'm buying a house and I'm not sure my partner would appreciate missing payments because I needed a new Linux box. And no, faithful Linux fans, I will not dump her on those grounds either! Good times with Ubuntu, but, the old girl is probably days away from giving up entirely.
Do you have a machine to donate? Donate it and you'll get a signed picture of me and the old machine together that you can put on your desk forevermore.
