Review: Overrated / Underrated

I really love the notion of this site and how unspoilt it is. It's a "what's hot" and "what's not" style site but focused as to attempting to represent an item's true value. So are Green Day as good as they're acclaimed to be or are they overrated? Interested? Read on.

overrated underrated

The site asks users to register and login in order to cast their votes against topics which is a good idea because then you're capturing contact details - allowing you to do email newsletters etc (Shameless plug - I'm able to do email marketing, contact me for more info). So a good technical start.

First impressions
It's a nice uncluttered design with a simple interface - kudos. The homepage has the right level of information - offering recent content allowing new users to be directed straight at the hot topics - another kudos. There is however a massive gaping white hole in the bottom left of the homepage that either needs content or imagery because it's just wasted space at the moment.

What it's all about
Started in January 2006 around disagreements about bands and movies, the site was established to give more people a voice as to whether certain things are as good as society claims. Once you're a registered user you can find a topic and - in a Reddit-esq way - allocate your vote. Essentially a thumbs up, down or "meh". A "meh" indicates that the level of hype is justified (on the site it's represented by a grey rhombus, "meh" is just my individual interpretation).

RottenTomatoes?
Essentially it's a similar beast, allowing users to rate topics and justify themselves. It's worthy of a larger audience in my opinion.

Improvements
There are a few things that could be done to the site. Firstly I'm concerned by the styles applied to links - opting for an understated dotted underline and nothing else - which I find far too inauspicious. They should really be a different colour and I think that doing something to them on hover would really help the user know where he/she is clicking. Other than that I think the site just needs more users and something good will happen. Personally I think there's more that could be done to monetize the site, the single Adsense block at the bottom right of each page looks a bit lonely and I'd be amazed if it generates any revenue.

Conclusion
Overall it's a really good idea, well realised if not under-supported. If you threw a couple of hundred regular users at it you'd have something quite special indeed. So please visit the site and have a play.
