Result: Software vs Operating System

Recently I pondered what mattered the most to users, the operating system or the software that utilises it? This is quite the time-honoured debate - what are you more tied to? The O/S's way of doing things or the Software on it? The readers of this site have had their say and now it's time for the conclusions!

Right, so the question was what is more important - the O/S or the Software utilising it? So are you more tied to XP than Photoshop (for example)? Theoretically, if you make a vote for Software - you're saying that you could migrate to another operating system provided that your software needs were sufficiently met.

However, a vote for operating system meant that whatever options were available, it is the O/S that keeps you doing what you're doing, you're more dependant on the way IT does things more than the things that can be installed on it.

61.9% software

So what were the results? Surprisingly the majority of people felt that the software was the most important aspect of their system, with 61.9% choosing it.

So a nice 38.1/61.9 split. What does this actually mean though?

Well two thirds of people think that the software is their constraining factor - theoretically allowing for a high number of potential O/S migratees. Clearly, if you have a higher dependence on the software you're more likely to move platform provided your needs are met by equivalent versions. Now I'm not going to read more into this result than that because you can't extrapolate "x% will move to Macs" from this poll but it does show that there is potential for movement and that's always a good thing.

As always this doesn't refer to the majority of uneducated users - the ones who have a PC simply for email purposes alone and haven't heard the word Linux before.

Get from this what you will, I was just curious what most people felt was more important and they have spoken...
