Bah, **** this I'm going into Ubuntu

An unusually "personal" post this one and it's as short as it is unprofessional. It came about while I was writing my review of the Relisys 32" LCD HD TV as Windows frustrated me sufficiently that I had to go into Ubuntu to get the job done.

My PC runs XP Pro (legally I might add) and a full suite of development and media applications. Unfortunately my Photoshop CS2 takes everything personally and largely refuses to co-exist peacefully alongside most applications - most notably Macromedia Dreamweaver. It periodically withholds functionality until an application of it's choice is closed. Sometimes it crashes outright until the environment is "right". It just happened to start playing up during my review of the Relisys.

Image editing gone awry
Photoshop decided that it didn't want to help. MSPaint had been banished to the untraceable depths of evil* along with some other common apps leaving me unable to resize an image - an absurd situation. I needed to get another image-editing application and I really couldn't be bothered to source one.

"**** this" I thought, "this is easier in Ubuntu"

Not liking the notion of installing yet another application I loaded up VMware and ran into Ubuntu Feisty Fawn faster than Roadrunner charged his way across the desert. I find it odd how I reached for Ubuntu first considering I had PCLinuxOS as another option (a distro I usually prefer) but I'll not ponder on that...

Load up GIMP, edit the image, write the review, GFTP it to the site, post it live and job done.

Yet another testament to how you can do without Windows. Although because I'm an avid gamer (well, when I find time) I still need to keep XP around so hopefully Adobe CS3 will offer more stability than I've experienced with CS2.
