30% considered a move to Linux over Vista
Back at the start of November last year I wrote an article summarising the results of a poll held on the site which questioned readers "what will you do when Vista lands"? The result was 29.8% said they would move to Linux. I feel it's time to re-evaluate my claims.
While it is a wildly inaccurate statistic for the population it carries more weight amongst the "tech savvy" that it questioned. Users were given the options of:
1. Upgrade to Vista
2. Stay on XP
3. Get a Mac
4. Use Linux

Nearly a third of all those questioned replied that they would use Linux rather than move to Vista. This was 6 months ago now and Vista has landed so I'm re-investigating what actually happened.
Vista wasn't looking bright pre-launch, it looked even worse afterwards
Yes, before anyone says anything - Vista has achieved decent sales but I feel they are reflective of new computer purchases. In terms of the "tech savvy" I think things were distinctly less rosy; but 30% of us didn't move to Linux because (unfortunately) the setup was wrong. Now I think things could be different given the rise and rise of certain distros (Ubuntu for example). Dell are soon going to be selling machines with it on so something good must be happening.
30% didn't consider a move back in November. They might now though...
Anyone who has had a play with things like SimplyMepis would probably consider it as a viable alternative now. Back in November things like Feisty Fawn weren't even in most tech-users' minds. However, since it's release it's been plastered across the news pages of all major sites like Digg, Slashdot, Reddit and many more. It's made such waves throughout the world of operating systems that I think even more would consider it.
Ubuntu has managed so much I thought it was worth revisiting this infamous article; to evaluate how inaccurate the poll was. Visit the original article and make your own thoughts - it caused quite some discussion...
